Course Outline

The course provides the necessary knowledge and skills to safely and competently operate and maintain a four wheel drive vehicle in the resource and infrastructure industries.

The key elements covered are:

  • Identify four-wheel drive specific terms, terminology and techniques
  • Plan for minimal environmental impact
  • Perform pre-departure checks
  • Use four-wheel drive mode in various conditions
  • Coordinate and recover a vehicle
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs on four-wheel drive vehicles

During the course you will have a hands-on opportunity to demonstrate operating a four wheel drive vehicle, on and off road, selecting routes and applying techniques to minimise damage to the environment and your vehicle.

 

Assessment

Theory and practical assessments will be conducted throughout the course.

On successful completion participants receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

 

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for anyone who is required to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in remote or isolated environments, for work or play.

 

Legislation / Compliance

This training is designed to comply with the:

  • Resources and Infrastructure Industry
  • QLD Coal Mining Regulations

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

There are no provisions for recognition of prior learning for the training.

 

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of activities that participants will need to perform include:

  • Plan, prepare and communicate work requirements
  • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues
  • Follow appropriate specifications during the placement and securing of the load
  • Following lifting plans that have been developed for the work
  • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • Process written records

Prerequisites:

Candidates must hold a current drivers license, and be physically capable of operating a 4WD vehicle.

Although not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring your own work vehicle to facilitate the training.
