Course Outline
This course is an awareness guide for people carrying out minor renovations including:
- Maintenance or surface preparation of walls, roofing, ceilings or flooring
- Installation of plumbing components
- Installation of electrical components or data cables
- Tiling and floor covering tasks
- Removing asbestos cement sheets less than 10 m2 in total area
It provides knowledge of asbestos identification, hazards and safety precautions for working with and transporting asbestos.

- What is asbestos – different types
- Possible health effects of asbestos exposure
- Types of asbestos-containing materials
- Working safely with non-friable asbestos
- Safe work procedures – drilling, painting, ceramic tile removal, Removing non-friable asbestos cement sheets
- Transport and disposal: homeowners & contractors and businesses
Face to face classroom delivery will be used to facilitate the underpinning knowledge requirements.
Assessment
There is no formal assessment required for this course however students are asked to participate in classroom and practical activities when required.
A Statement of Attendance will be issued.
Who Should Attend?
This guide mainly applies to tradespeople & do-it-yourself (DIY) home renovators carrying out minor renovations on building materials that may contain asbestos.
Legislation / Compliance
Asbestos is managed & controlled in Queensland by 10 main statutes and two codes of practice. These are administered by state government agencies and local councils.
Work health & safety legislation regulates the management, control & removal of asbestos in the workplace (including residential premises which are a ‘workplace’ when work is undertaken by a contractor).

Public health legislation applies to asbestos-related activities carried out at non-workplaces settings (i.e. by home owners at domestic premises).
Environmental protection & waste legislation regulates the transportation of commercial & industrial waste, the licensing of disposal facilities (such as landfills) & notification and remediation of contaminated land.
Recognition of Prior Learning
There are no provisions for recognition of prior learning for the training.
Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)
To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication for the purpose of:
- Understanding, Interpreting & facilitating the risk assessment processes
- Reading and understanding procedures for safely working with asbestos
- Understanding procedures and legal requirements regarding working with and disposing of asbestos
