Course Outline
This course is designed to prepare a worker to conduct basic chainsaw activities for felling trees. The Nationally Accredited course will provide the skills and knowledge required to assess and manually fall small trees with a low level of complexity and to complete operator maintenance.
The course consists of face to face classroom delivery learning techniques and fundamental underpinning knowledge of basic felling techniques.
Practical application will consist of felling small trees using basic felling techniques at a location within the Gladstone area.
Assessment
Theory and practical assessments will be conducted throughout the duration of the course.
Personnel deemed not yet competent will be given an opportunity to join another course session.
On successful completion participants receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.
Who Should Attend?
Persons who have basic knowledge and skills in operation and maintenance of a chainsaw and who are seeking to learn about felling small diameter trees.

Recognition of Prior Learning
There are provisions for recognition of prior learning for the training.
Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)
To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of activities that participants will need to perform include:
- Estimate tree dimensions, including height, length, diameter and volume
- Complete routine calculations and report on size, length, diameter of felled trees
- Use appropriate spoken communication strategies with personnel on site when felling trees
- Interpret hand signals with other operators to ensure safe tree felling
- Interpret workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures
- Interpret work orders and manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations
- Complete accurate basic records for tree felling process, equipment faults and maintenance requirements
- Identify an unsafe tree
- Efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation for and felling of trees using work orders
