Course Outline

This unit of competency is a nationally accredited course that provides the skills and knowledge required to monitor the effects of blasting on the environment.

This unit of competency covers:

  • Developing strategies to control effects of blasting
  • Implement environment monitoring systems
  • Review strategies to control & ensure effectiveness of blasting operations

 

Assessment

Online and work based:

Participants can complete a theory assessment using the online portal. Practical assessments will require evidence to be uploaded post completion at site.

On successful completion participants receive a Statement of Attainment.

 

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for those in the Mining and/or Quarrying industry currently working as a shotfirer or looking to upskill to broaden job opportunities.

 

Legislation / Compliance

This course covers all aspects relating to;

  • Explosives Act & Regulations
  • Coal Mining Health Safety  Act & Regulation
  • Mining & Quarrying Health Safety Act & Regulations

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is subject to approval once student has met with trainer assessor & sufficient evidence can be presented.

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of LLN requirements participants will need to demonstrate include:

  • Interpret & follow Acts, Regulations & Standards relating to explosives
  • Interpret & apply blasting compliance
  • Identify, evaluate & minimise environmental ground vibration hazards & controls from blasting, flyrock & air blast
  • Implement environment monitoring systems
  • Implement procedures for monitoring, recording and reporting on environmental controls
  • Audit the effectiveness of environmental controls
  • Carry out & record activities

Prerequisites:

For entry into this unit of competence, participants must hold a current shotfirer licence or an experienced worker in blast design.
