Course Outline

The Open Shot firing refresher course is for students in Resources and Infrastructure Industries who have previously completed Open Cut Shotfiring licence within 5 years.

The course provides students with the opportunity to refresh their fundamental knowledge & skills required to conduct surface shotfiring operations in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries & in accordance with Queensland Shotfirers Authority.

The open cut shotfiring competency covers:

  • Explosives legislation
  • Explosives properties & identification
  • Blast design principles
  • Explosive initiation
  • Environmental effects of blasting
  • Transport & storage of explosives
  • Charging explosives
  • Tying & firing
  • Secondary blasting
  • Disposal of explosives

Current blast reports will need to be submitted.

 

Assessment

This skill set refresher is available for completion online for experienced workers wishing to renew their skill set.

On successful completion participants receive a Statement of Attainment.

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for those who wish to refresh skills as a qualified open cut shotfirer to maintain currency.

  • Coal Mining Health Safety  Act & Regulation
  • Mining & Quarrying Health Safety Act & Regulations
  • ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management Standard

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is subject to approval once student has met with trainer assessor & sufficient evidence can be presented.

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of LLN requirements participants will need to demonstrate include:

  • Interpret & follow Acts, Regulations & Standards relating to explosives
  • Apply explosives compliance documentation
  • Confirm & apply work instructions
  • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures
  • Communicate with other persons
  • Resolve coordination requirements
  • Access, interpret and apply geological data & weather conditions
  • Carry out calculations
  • Carry out & record activities
  • Carry out post blast inspection
  • Complete reports
