Course Outline

This unit of competency is a nationally accredited course that provides the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere.

The breathing apparatus competency covers:

  • Donning & removal of apparatus
  • Operation & control of breathing apparatus
  • Operational testing & best practice procedures
  • Respiratory system & calculation of air use
  • Entrapment procedures
  • Communication methods
  • Effects of irrespirable atmosphere
  • Maintenance and returning to operational status

Face to face classroom delivery will be used to facilitate the underpinning knowledge requirements with practical hands on use of the equipment in simulated environments.

 

Assessment

Both theory and practical assessments will be conducted throughout the course.

On successful completion participants receive an electronic Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

 

Who Should Attend?

Workers who are required to enter an enclosed space which has hazardous gases/vapours, a toxic atmosphere or for other applications requiring the wearing of a breathing apparatus.

 

Legislation / Compliance

This course covers all aspects relating to AS/NZ 1715 selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment and AS/NZ  1716 respiratory protective devices.

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

Due to the risk involved and the AS/NZ 1715 recommendations recognised prior learning is not applied.

The Australian standard AS/NZ 1715 recommends retraining annually to maintain currency.

 

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of LLN requirements that will need to be demonstrated include:

  • Identify, report/record faulty or damaged equipment
  • Identify, monitor & control hazards
  • Establish & maintain communication with appropriate personnel throughout the activities
  • Follow procedures
  • Calculate air use

Prerequisites:

As per AS/NZ 1716, participants are required to be clean shaven, with no beard. Hair to be tied back away from face to ensure positive seal.
