Course Outline

This cluster of competencies is a nationally accredited course that provides the skills & knowledge required to assist surface shotfiring operations in the Resources & Infrastructure Industries.

The support shotfiring cluster covers:

  • Explosives legislation
  • Explosives hazards, Classifications and Properties
  • Geology and blast design
  • Transport & storage of explosives
  • Charging explosives
  • Tying & firing, post blast inspections
  • Secondary blasting and disposal of explosives
  • Record keeping

Delivery method

This cluster is delivered using the DTE online learning program, where you can study, learn and complete the theory assessments at your convenience.

For students who do not have access to a practical training ground, DTE shall supply a Statement of Completion to students who successfully pass their theoretical components and shall allow a 12 month grace period to complete the practical components of the cluster of  competencies.

 

Assessment

Theory assessments will be conducted throughout the course.

Students will be required to complete a logbook to log practical blasting activities.

Access to a mine site will be required to complete logbook tasks for practical applications.

On successful completion of all components participants receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

 

Who Should Attend?

This course is deigned for those who wish to gain future employment as a Shotfirers Assistant.

  • Coal Mining Health Safety  Act & Regulation
  • Mining & Quarrying Health Safety Act & Regulations
  • ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management Standard

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is subject to approval once student has met with trainer assessor & sufficient evidence can be presented.

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of LLN requirements participants will need to demonstrate include:

  • Interpret & follow Acts, Regulations & Standards relating to explosives
  • Confirm & apply shotfiring plans
  • Store, handle & transport of explosives
  • Maintain written stock records & report discrepancies
  • Complete required documentation & reports promptly

Prerequisites:

Before any participant can be trained in the use of blasting explosives, they must be able to supply evidence of a current security clearance issued by the police which also includes Australia Security Intelligence Organisation checks.

Minimum requirement of receipt of application for such security clearance.

Access to a mine site and explosives will be required to complete the practical components of this training.
