Working At Heights

Course Outline

This course is a nationally accredited one day course and is accepted in the mining, construction, oil, gas, and other main stream industries throughout Australia.

It provides students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills required to support site-specific identification of working at heights and the requirements to do so.

The course is compliant with Australian WHS Regulations and the AS/NZS 1981 Industrial Fall Arrest Systems and Devices AS/NZS 1891 Portable Ladders.

The course outline includes:

  • Definitions
  • Current legislation
  • Duty of care in relation to working at heights
  • Identification and control of risks including completing a JSEA
  • Use and maintenance of harnesses and lanyards
  • Care of equipment
  • Rescue equipment and plans
  • Identification and use of rescue equipment

Face to face classroom delivery will be used to facilitate the underpinning knowledge requirements.

 

Assessment

Both theory and practical assessments will be conducted throughout the course.

On successful completion participants receive a Statement of Attainment and a wallet sized ID card enabling participants to carry proof of training.

 

Who Should Attend?

Industry workers who are exposed to heights risks as defined by legislation.

As an Industry requirement workers should refresh the training bi-annually to remain competent.

 

Legislation / Compliance

Work safely at heights meets with the requirements of employer due diligence in ensuring its workforce is trained against high risk activities.

This course covers necessary aspects relating to AS/NZS 1981 and managing the risks of falls at workplaces code of practice.

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

Due to the risk involved in this course recognised prior learning may only be recognised if the candidate has recently completed the training, or has an IRATA current recognised qualification for heights. Every two years this training must attended to remain competent.

 

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of LLN requirements participants will need to demonstrate include:

  • Access, interpret and apply height safety procedures and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • Identify work procedures and instructions
  • Check safety system periodically for compliance
  • Monitor risk control measures to ensure that they are effective and appropriate
